Aldrick the 1905 Steiff Teddy Bear | Rare Antique Bear with Provenance | Asquiths
Meet Aldrick: A Remarkable Steiff Teddy Bear from the Dawn of Teddy Bear History
There are some teddy bears that simply make you smile... and then there are those that quietly take your breath away.
At Asquiths, we are privileged to care for many wonderful bears, but every so often one arrives whose story is as remarkable as the bear himself. Aldrick is one such bear.
Made by Steiff in Germany around 1905, Aldrick dates from the earliest years of teddy bear production. More than 120 years later, he stands as a beautiful reminder of the craftsmanship, innovation and affection that made the teddy bear one of the world's most cherished companions.
A Name Inspired by His Family
When this wonderful bear arrived at Asquiths, we felt he deserved a name worthy of his history.
His original owners were the Aldrick family, who treasured him for generations. To honour that remarkable connection, we decided to name him Aldrick.
One of the most touching parts of his story is the original family photograph that accompanies him. The faded image captures one of the Aldrick children proudly holding their beloved teddy bear more than a century ago. It is a rare glimpse into a family's life and a poignant reminder that behind every antique teddy bear lies a deeply personal story.
From Germany to America... and Finally to Henley-on-Thames
Aldrick's journey has taken him across continents.
After spending many decades with the Aldrick family, he was eventually discovered at their family estate in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Despite the passing of time, his history had not been forgotten, and he remained accompanied by an original photograph and an extraordinary early twentieth-century clown costume.
Today, his journey has brought him to Asquiths in Henley-on-Thames, where visitors can meet him and discover his remarkable story.
An Important Early Steiff Bear
Collectors will immediately recognise that Aldrick is far more than simply an old teddy bear.
He is believed to be a fascinating transitional Steiff model, produced during the period between the earliest 28 PB bears and the later 28 PAB series. Details such as his unclipped cone muzzle, black boot button eyes, distinctive ear-to-ear head seam, elongated limbs and black-backed felt paw pads all reflect Steiff's continual refinement of teddy bear design during these pioneering years.
These early construction features make bears like Aldrick particularly scarce and highly significant within the history of teddy bear collecting.
Carefully Conserved for the Future
Like many bears that have lived long and much-loved lives, Aldrick had undergone repairs before arriving with us.
Unfortunately, at some point in his past he had been inappropriately re-stuffed, leaving him quite unlike the bear Steiff originally created.
To preserve his historical integrity, Aldrick underwent careful conservation. The unsuitable stuffing was replaced with historically appropriate materials, and his paw pads were sympathetically re-stitched while retaining the gentle signs of wear that tell the story of a lifetime of love.
Conservation is never about making an antique bear look new. Instead, it is about ensuring that future generations can continue to appreciate both the bear and the history he carries.
More Than a Teddy Bear
Standing beside Aldrick today, it is impossible not to wonder where he has travelled, the hands that have held him, and the generations of children who have loved him.
His journey has taken him from Germany in the early years of the twentieth century, to a family home in America, and now to Henley-on-Thames, where his story continues.
He is far more than a collector's piece.
He is a survivor, a family heirloom, and a tangible connection to the earliest days of teddy bear history.
If you're visiting Asquiths, we'd be delighted for you to meet Aldrick in person. Like all truly special bears, he has a quiet presence that photographs can never quite capture.
Sometimes, the oldest stories are still the most magical.
